Hair stylists explain: Should you wash your hair before coloring it?

When you want to dye your hair, of course, you want to do it right. That’s why stylists and experts recommend using a combination of shampoo and conditioner before diving into a new hair color.

But before you apply your favorite color-safe shampoo, you might wonder: should you wash your hair before coloring it? If so, why, and how should you do it best? That’s why Allison Gandolfo, a celebrity hairstylist and color designer at Zahir Ziani Salon, has broken down everything she knows about the best pre-coloring routine.

Gandolfo starts by explaining that washing your hair before coloring is non-negotiable. “If your hair is dirty, it is advisable to wash it before you come in for a hair coloring appointment,” she assures. “The only exception is if you have a sensitive scalp or sensitivity to hair dye.” In that case, consult your trusted colorist or dermatologist on how to best soothe and cleanse your sensitive scalp before coloring your hair. But why is washing your hair before coloring so important? According to Allison, the cleanliness of your hair affects the effectiveness of the color.

“Natural oils on a slightly dirty scalp will protect you from hair dye applied directly to the scalp,” she explains, “and the strands start at the root, so it’s really best to wash your hair if you want the best color.” If you’re concerned about how washing your hair might affect color saturation or the dryness of your hair, she reassures by saying, “Washing your hair before coloring doesn’t affect the color.” The verdict? She concludes, “If your hair is dirty, and you’re not typically sensitive to hair dye, wash your hair 12-24 hours before coloring.”

Does the regular hair washing routine differ from the pre-coloring routine? For starters, Allison says, “It’s important to check if the hair is wet in all areas before applying the product. If the hair is completely wet, it will allow for smoother product application and easier lathering to ensure a clean scalp and hair.” That’s why it’s particularly important to find a high-quality shampoo that lathers well and thoroughly cleanses. “Look for silicone-free shampoos and clarifying formulas.” And what about conditioner? She assures that “conditioner doesn’t affect hair color.”
