What causes fungal infections and how to prevent them

If you have had a fungal infection before, you are probably familiar with all its symptoms – intense itching, irritation, and thick, white discharge. This unpleasant condition “down there” occurs due to an overgrowth of the Candida fungus, most commonly Candida albicans. Candida normally lives in the intestinal tract, but a change in the balance of fungi and bacteria can lead to the development of a fungal infection.

Women of all ages – from teenagers to menopausal women – can get a fungal infection, but some are more prone to it than others. Pregnancy, diabetes, and the use of antibiotics can increase the risk. In addition, a high level of estrogen can lead to excessive Candida growth, making women who use birth control pills more susceptible to infection.

Medical professionals are still not entirely sure whether certain lifestyle factors contribute to the development of fungal infections. There are many questions when it comes to clothing choice and fungal infection, and opinions differ. However, for women who are very prone to fungal infections, the choice of material they wear – whether it’s underwear, workout clothes, or pants – can be very important, as synthetics and materials that “don’t breathe” can increase the chances of getting an infection.

If you are prone to fungal infections (if you have had them two or more times), it would be desirable to modify a few things. And that includes sleeping (and wearing everyday clothes) in breathable materials (like cotton) and avoiding the use of scented sanitary pads and tampons.

Conclusion? If you have had a fungal infection only once, it is nothing to worry about. However, if you have them more often, it is important to visit a doctor to check that it is not actually another health problem that is causing the fungal infection.
