In their desire to appear younger, adult women often make the mistake of copying fashion intended for teenagers, which can make them look ridiculous or, worse, older than they are.
“As you get older, you should strive for a more sophisticated look,” says Charla Krupp, author of the bestseller “How Not to Look Old.” She advises that if you want to look younger than you are, you should think of Jackie O., not Britney.
However, dressing in accordance with your age doesn’t mean you have to dress like your mother.
In your forties and fifties, you are still expected to follow trends, but the trick is to recognize which trends are suitable for your age and which ones you should skip.
What should you avoid
Short shorts – Yes, Elle Macpherson is 58 and still wears hot shorts, but let’s be realistic, you are not Elle Macpherson. As you age, showing off your knees should be less frequent. Knees can show wrinkles and add years to your appearance.
Ripped jeans – They absolutely have no place in your wardrobe if you’re over sixty. Jeans can still be a part of your wardrobe, but they should be of sturdy fabric and in solid colors.
Colored leggings – White, pink, red, and blue leggings are better left to teenagers. Opt for black or possibly other dark colors like navy or brown.
Peter Pan collars – You should avoid them. Here, the rule of less is more applies. Choose simpler and more refined collars for your shirts.
If you have a great body, there’s nothing wrong with showing off your midriff, but only at the beach or pool. Anywhere else, forget clothing that reveals it.
Gladiator sandals – Sandals inspired by Roman gladiators occasionally come back into fashion, but try to avoid those that go above the ankle because they draw attention to wrinkled skin around the ankles.
