According to a new study, the age difference between partners can significantly influence the longevity of a relationship. The concept of being in a relationship with someone considerably younger or older still raises debates, with numerous celebrity couples serving as examples.
While exceptions always exist, research conducted by Emory University in Atlanta suggests that specific age differences can pose challenges in relationships. The greater the age gap between partners, the higher the likelihood of a breakup, as reported by Yahoo!.
Surveying 3000 participants, the study revealed that couples with a five-year age difference have an 18% higher chance of breaking up compared to those of the same age. Interestingly, this figure jumps to 39% for couples with a ten-year gap.
For couples with a 20-year age difference, the research predicts a 95% likelihood of separation. What might be the ideal age difference? Scientists believe that couples with just a one-year gap have the lowest breakup chances, at only three percent.
“Following this guideline helps you stay within an age range that ensures shared interests with your partner and likely enhances better communication,” states relationship expert David Bennett.
Of course, experts agree that one shouldn’t strictly adhere to this rule, as someone younger/older can still surprise with (im)maturity and behavior.
Let this guide you towards someone with whom you can build a sustainable relationship.
