Face powder is applied to cover small imperfections on the face and for protection against external factors. It is important to choose a quality product that matches your skin tone and type.
Choosing the right shade for your skin tone:
Always try the powder in daylight to see if the shade matches your skin tone. Skin undertone is the pigment visible “under” your skin, regardless of your overall skin color. If you have a warm undertone, look for powders with yellow tones. If you have a cool undertone, powders with pink tones will suit you better. You can determine your undertone by looking at the color of your eyes and hair – those with a warmer skin tone usually have darker eye and hair colors, and vice versa.
Select a powder suitable for your skin type:
The finish of the powder plays a significant role in achieving a natural look. There are three variations: semi-matte or satin, matte, and luminous. Most liquid foundations have a semi-matte finish, which is the most natural. If you have oily skin, matte powder will be the best choice as it absorbs excess oil. For dry or mature skin, a satin finish will be ideal. If you want a bit of radiance, opt for a powder with a luminous or glow finish. These liquid foundations contain light-reflecting particles that minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. If you have oily skin, avoid using such powders.
Types of powder:
Mineral powder – Loved for its non-comedogenic properties, this powder covers imperfections without clogging the pores. It suits all skin types. Apply it with a brush in circular motions from the center of the face outward.
Liquid foundation – The most common type of foundation due to its accessibility, ease of application, and affordability. It is available for all skin types, provides a natural look, and is easy to apply. The most important factor is to choose a shade that matches your skin tone to maintain a natural appearance.
Pressed powder – Best used as a setting layer. Apply it with a powder brush and then go over the face again to remove any excess.
Tinted moisturizer – If you don’t have much time for makeup and your skin is already clear, a tinted moisturizer is an ideal solution. Apply it with your fingers or a foundation brush. It is the easiest to use among all types of powders.
Compact powder – It is recommended to use a sponge for application, although some prefer using a brush. If using a sponge, lightly touch the skin and wash it regularly to avoid transferring dirt and oil back onto the skin.
When searching for a new powder, carry a compact mirror and apply the powder on your face, not your hand. Apply a thin layer from your cheek to the jawline, blend it into the skin, and observe how it looks in natural light.
