Many people cool their living spaces with air conditioning, but those who don’t have an installed air conditioner in their homes or are concerned that an overly chilled room might affect their health can resort to alternative solutions.
You can definitely lower the temperature in your living space by implementing a few simple tricks, such as darkening the room, turning off electrical appliances, or using a fan.
Lower the blinds/shutters:
By darkening the room with blinds or shutters, you can prevent sunlight from entering the space and reduce heat during the day.
If you don’t have blinds or shutters, use curtains in light colors and keep them drawn over the windows.
Use cotton materials:
Make sure the sheets in your home are 100% cotton. Store away satin and polyester sheets for cooler nights and replace them with cotton bedding. Cotton material is more breathable and comfortable for the skin.
Turn off electrical devices:
Electrical devices generate additional heat, even regular light bulbs. Therefore, it is recommended to turn off the lights to avoid further heating the room. Also, unplug all electronic devices and chargers from the sockets, as they can emit heat even when not in use.
Fan tricks:
During hot summer days, many people cool their spaces using fans. While many place the fan facing themselves, a better cooling effect can be achieved by placing the fan in front of an open window to circulate the cool air effectively.
You can also create a “double draft” in the room, expelling the warm air and letting in the cooler air. During the day, close all windows and doors and lower the blinds. At night, use the fan trick by opening all windows and placing a fan near one window facing outwards to push out the warm air. Place another fan near a different window, facing inward to bring in the cooler air from outside.
Another fan trick is to place a container of ice in front of a fan blowing inward, creating your own “air conditioning.” As the air passes over the ice, it cools down, circulating refreshing cooler air throughout the room.
By implementing these tips, you can effectively cool down your living space without relying on air conditioning, creating a more comfortable environment during hot days.
