You should change your bikini after every swim in the pool

Many ladies love sunbathing by the poolside after a refreshing swim, waiting for their swimsuits to dry. However, health experts warn that sitting in a wet bikini for too long could lead to a nasty infection that could disrupt your vacation.

Unfortunately, bacteria thrive in warm and moist conditions, and keeping the lower part of your bikini wet won’t help. Tia Guster, a midwife and gynecologist from Piedmont, believes that swimsuits are the perfect breeding ground for bacteria.

Wearing a wet swimsuit for extended periods can attract unwanted guests on your vacation – vaginal fungal infections.

What are the symptoms of a fungal infection?

It is often caused by an overgrowth of the Candida albicans fungus and can leave you with various uncomfortable symptoms, including:

  • Itching and irritation
  • Burning sensation, especially during sex or urination
  • Redness and swelling of your vulva
  • Vaginal pain
  • Vaginal rash
  • Thick, white vaginal discharge

How to effectively prevent fungal infections?

Dr. Guster has some advice on how to prevent this bothersome infection. Change into a clean, dry swimsuit after swimming, or you can wash your wet swimsuit and use a hairdryer to speed up the drying process.

If you plan on wearing your swimsuit all day, consider wearing a sarong, a dress, or loose shorts that allow for air circulation and contribute to faster drying of the costume, suggested Dr. Guster.

Choose a swimsuit with moisture-wicking properties as they can help remove moisture from your skin and bring it to the surface of your swimsuit until it evaporates.

By following these simple steps, you can ensure a more enjoyable and infection-free vacation by the poolside. Your health and comfort should always be a priority, so take care of your swimsuit hygiene to make the most of your holiday.
