Hair loss is a natural condition during the growth phases, but there are various other patterns that should be checked by a doctor.
One cause of hair loss can be aging or a deficiency of certain vitamins in the body. However, if you notice significant hair loss, it may be a sign that your health is at risk.
According to hair surgeon Greg Vida from Harley Street Hair Clinic, hair loss is a little-known symptom of diabetes. He emphasizes that high blood sugar levels can lead to hair loss.
There are two main types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Type 1 is described as a lifelong condition where the immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells. Vida describes type 2 as a condition that individuals can have for years without being aware of it, where the body does not respond properly to insulin.
Elevated blood sugar levels can damage the blood vessels that are important for hair growth. Dr. Vida highlights that blood vessels essentially carry oxygen throughout the body. In normal conditions, hair growth goes through three phases: active growth, resting, and shedding.
“Due to changes in the hair growth cycle, people with diabetes can expect to lose more hair than usual. Although high blood sugar levels won’t completely stop the growth cycle, individuals with this condition may notice faster hair loss compared to hair growth, leading to thinning,” explains the doctor.
