Ice cream is a beloved treat enjoyed worldwide, providing refreshment at any time of day or year. With a fascinating history spanning millennia, this frozen dessert captivates hearts globally.
While enjoying the cold and delicious treat called ice cream, have you ever wondered where the idea of ice cream originated? Do you know how ice cream became so popular and evolved into the diverse array of flavors and textures we have today? I hadn’t either, but I did some googling, and here are a few interesting tidbits before my two ice cream recipes!
Historical trivia about ice cream
The first traces of ice cream can be found in ancient China, where frozen mixtures of milk, rice, and snow were used to create a cold delicacy. Over time, ice cream spread to other regions, such as Persia, where ice creams made from ice and flavored with fruits were prepared.
However, Italy had the greatest influence on the development of ice cream during the Renaissance. Italian chefs and pastry makers were pioneers in creating sophisticated ice cream recipes using ingredients such as milk, sugar, fruits, and spices. Italian ice cream parlors became renowned for their rich flavors and innovative ice cream-making techniques.
In the 18th century, ice cream arrived in America, and the first ice cream shop was opened in New York. Ice cream quickly captivated American citizens and became a popular treat for all social classes. During the 19th century, the development of the Industrial Revolution enabled mass production of ice cream. With the use of freezing machines, ice cream became accessible to a broader population at more affordable prices. Ice cream stands and trucks could be seen on the streets, attracting people with their vibrant flavors and appealing presentations.

Ice cream is more than just a frozen treat
Today, there is an incredible variety of ice cream flavors available, ranging from traditional ones like vanilla and chocolate to exotic combinations with spices such as lavender, peanut butter, salted caramel, and even basil or mint-infused ice creams. Additionally, you can choose from different types of ice cream, such as popsicles, cones, or cups.
Ice cream not only provides us with the pleasure of taste but also offers refreshment on hot summer days. It can be enjoyed on its own, as a dessert after a meal, or as an accompaniment to various cakes and desserts. Ice cream is also a popular dessert for special moments and celebrations like birthdays and picnics!
Ice cream is more than just a frozen treat – it’s a sweet symbol of refreshment! Whether you opt for a classic flavor or experiment with new combinations, ice cream is always an excellent choice! I love combining it with dairy and water kefir to add beneficial bacteria, and this time, I used milk kefir along with protein powder. Below, I bring you two refreshing suggestions! Enjoy the flavors!
Chocolate ice cream ingredients:
- 4 frozen bananas, sliced
- ¾ cup milk kefir
- 3 tablespoons almond butter or peanut butter
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 2 scoops chocolate-flavored protein powder a handful of cocoa nibs

Raspberry ice cream
- 4 frozen bananas, sliced
- ¾ cup milk kefir
- 2 scoops unflavored protein powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- two handfuls of raspberries
Preparation:
Blend the ingredients separately for each ice cream flavor. Both mixtures should be creamy.
Pour them into separate containers, cover, and place them in the freezer overnight. Remove them 20 minutes before serving to let the ice cream soften a bit!
Serve in a bowl or a cone!
If the ice cream isn’t sweet enough for your taste, you can always add an extra banana, honey, or a sweetener of your choice.
